Our Story
Glesga Roasters began when James Faddes, a former minister and manager of Bishopbriggs Community Church and Glesga Roasters, was inspired during a trip to Rwanda with Comfort International. While visiting a coffee farm there, a question was asked; "Has anybody ever considered importing Rwandan coffee to Scotland, roasting it, and using it to raise awareness of the charitable work we're involved in through Comfort International?"
It was an unconventional idea then-and still is, but one that couldn't be let go of.
The vision was twofold: to provide rehabilitation and employability. opportunities for individuals coming out of the criminal justice system or nearing the end of recovery journeys, and to establish direct, ethical partnerships with coffee farms, supporting self-sustaining and empowering work in places like Rwanda.
What began as a small kitchen project-pan-frying coffee beans and learning the basics, soon grew into a larger endeavor. Under the charitable umbrella of the Bishopbriggs Community Church, Glesga Roasters expanded, tasting and roasting workshops were held at prisons, churches, and events across Scotland.
As the initiative gained momentum, we upgraded to larger roasting equipment, welcomed more placements through our partners at Street Connect, and funded barista and roasting certificates for volunteers.
To further our mission, the organization brought in a couple from Canada who joined us through YWAM to help grow the roastery and start a cafe. Their involvement marked a new chapter, building on the Spirit-led vision that had guided the ministry from the beginning.
Today, Glesga Roasters continues to thrive, combining a passion for exceptional coffee with transformative community impact.
